Jim McGovern condemns Coalition Spending Cuts.
Jim McGovern, MP for Dundee West, speaks out against the results of the Comprehensive Spending Review and the damage it will have on Dundee and the country.
Jim McGovern said;
“The decisions for this spending review are disastrous for Dundee and the country. There was a choice about how quickly and how deeply the government could cut, and they chose to go for the most draconian and savage way possible.”
“490,000 people will now lose their jobs. That’s 490,000 individuals and families with a great deal of uncertainty and fear. Economically that’s all those people not spending money in the private sector, now looking for work in an already crowded market. No plan to create jobs, no plan for growth and a cull of the public sector. This is an irresponsible and damaging policy.”
“The deficit must be reduced, but that could be achieved by taking a different path and by using public support to boost growth and maintain our vital services, whilst cutting less more slowly. It should be the wealthiest, the banks and the huge corporations that should finally pay their share; wealthy tax dodgers should be targeted, not those on benefits or those who rely on public services. “
“Public sector jobs will be lost, investment in housing and infrastructure will end, and the private sector will be damaged. This is economically illiterate, socially perverse and totally callous. I am disgusted and I will be fighting to do what I can for my constituents.”
Mr McGovern concluded;
“It was not spending on public services that caused this deficit; it was the reckless and dangerous practices of the bankers and financiers. The government and the financial services may look down on the public and think they’ll forget the damage that industry has caused, but my constituents have not forgotten. It is the Labour Party that is standing up for them, it is us who will defend ordinary people who did not create the financial crisis, and it us who will support the public services they rely on.”
